Medical Ibogaine
This project’s goal is to elaborate a scientific study of a chemical addiction treatment that took place in Brazil recently, combining the powerful ecodelic Ibogaine (the pure synthesized substance, and not the extract, which has other molecules and can be considered “impure” and dangerous) and psychotherapy. More than a hundred patients were treated by a certified and authorized physician in partnership with a psychologist.
Ibogaine is an alkaloid found in plants of the West African rainforest. It has been used in traditional African religion and medicine for centuries and was first purified by French chemists at the beginning of this century (Fernandez 1982 and Goutarel et al. 1993). The anti-addictive effects of Ibogaine were serendipitously discovered within a group of young drug users experimenting with a variety of psychoactive substances during the early1960s. Seven of the group were addicted to heroin and concurrently using cocaine and amphetamine. None of the individuals who were chemically dependent had any intention of ceasing their drug use and the Ibogaine was taken in anticipation of achieving another “high”. Yet, a single administration of Ibogaine eliminated signs of narcotic withdrawal in all seven of the heroin addicts and interrupted the desire to continue drug use in five out of the seven for approximately six months.
In the 1980s interest in Ibogaine’s anti-addictive effects were again taken up by Howard S. Lotsof and Norma E. Alexander, thus precipitating a series of preclinical and clinical experiments throughout the 80′s and 90′s to evaluate the effects seen in the seven addicts in the 1960s, one of whom was Mr. Lotsof himself.
Based on Ibogaine’s rapid and dramatic effects in eliminating withdrawal and drug seeking behavior while concurrently addressing the underlying psychopathology of the patient by initiating a process of abreaction (Lotsof et al. 1996) and, as Ibogaine therapy is acceptable to drug users, a significant reduction in drug use can be accomplished if Ibogaine is available as a treatment modality.
Pharmaceutically prepared and purified Ibogaine has been used in the treatment of addicts with the aid of psychotherapy by a certified physician in an authorized hospital in Brazil. Near 200 ibogaine sessions with more than 100 patients have shown exciting and promising preliminary results.
This project is being conducted in collaboration with the doctor responsible for this alternative treatment of drug addicts, most of which dependent on crack cocaine. Statistical analysis will be carefully conducted out of the results available so far, and semi-structured interviews will be made by a specialist psychologist with about 30 out of the 100 patients already treated.
Nonetheless, it’s important to stress the risk of a one-sided approach, one that relies on the medication alone. Both preliminary data analysis and the therapists experience point to a clear understanding: family support and truthful, deep and voluntary will to heal are crucial for a positive and lasting result.

I recommend you enter into a treatment that’s proven to work.
Thank you for the suggestion Peater. But let’s not forget that, in scientific terms, any treatment must be tested in order in order to be proven…
