Are ecodelics safe?

Among native populations in North, Central and South America, ecodelics are respectfully treated as medicine. Contrary to our western worldview, which is based on the cartesian model that sees the universe as a clockwork machine, and ascribes a reductionist role to the doctor (that to restore the functionality of the organism by fixing its disfunctional parts); the indigenous cultures understand health as a process of dynamic balance between the physical, emotional and spiritual - or transpersonal - aspects of the organism; as well as its interactions with its natural and social environment.

Thus, if the western medicine aims at the symptoms, the ecodelic medicine helps to integrate all aspects that have led to disease, searching for the deeper roots of the illness. This sharpening of awareness is meant to bring about the special state in which the organism begins the process of integration.

By integrating the roots of the problem, we allow health to be naturally restored by the individual’s potential for self-healing. It’s also important to note that when we talk about health, it should be clear that we’re not talking about the absence of disease alone.

The concept of mental health should include a harmonious integration of the cartesian and the transpersonal modes of perception and experience. To perceive reality exclusively in the transpersonal mode is incompatible with adequate functioning and survival in the everyday world. To experience an incoherent mixture of both modes of perception without being able to integrate them is psychotic. But to be limited to the cartesian mode of perception alone is also madness; it is the madness of our dominant culture. ~ Fritjof Capra

Still, you may ask yourself a reasonable question: but haven’t the turbulent 60s and 70s shown us these drugs are dangerous? The most popular substances from this class (such as LSD, DMT, Psilocybin and Mescaline) are Schedule I substances, seen by the majority of people as harmful drugs. Isn’t their very prohibition an evidence of their dangerous and therefore unhealthy nature?
