Medicina (film)

Throughout millennia, human kind has nurtured an animated relationship with the Earth and Cosmos, mediated by ritual. Human beings were part of the greater sentience that pervades all of existence.

Cosmos and Earth have slowly been separated from us, reified to give room for progress to unfold. Now, as science and technology achieve astonishing levels of sophistication, they suddenly encounter their shadows, as perspectives for times to come seem to have become increasingly pessimistic.

Parallel to dire forecasts about ecological catastrophe, modern medicine is facing an unprecedented crisis, after setting out spectacularly for the conquest of disease. Escalating rates of modern illnesses such as autoimmune and chronic diseases, cancer, and all sorts of mental disorders are alarming, and have been fostering distrust in a health care system based on mechanical reengineering.

Neglected by science and modern medicine, Earth-based ceremonial practices such as indigenous shamanism reemerge from the ashes of our ancestors in the opposite direction of the biomedical model. While modern medicine is busy trying to suppress symptoms and control the output, these practices work with a whole that transcends the mere sum of its parts, by allowing what needs to flow to be consciously acknowledged and run its course.

In this sense, indigenous healing comprises a much broader spectrum than western medicine, since it attends not only to the physical aspect of illness, but to the social, psychological and spiritual ones as well.

Following the route of ancient wisdom traditions that have survived the onslaught of modernity through fragmentation and assimilation, but which are now being rapidly transformed and reaffirmed in a globalized world; and combining it with the rigorous approach of scholars and practicing scientists, Medicina is bound to foster an alchemical transformation in our understanding about health, illness and spirituality.
