This is a research topic focused on the study of the therapeutic potential of ibogaine in the treatment of drug addiction, including alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, cocaine and crack-cocaine.

Our first study showed that ibogaine-treated patients are able to stay abstinent for a median of 5 months, a result far beyond current available treatments.

This study was performed with retrospective methodology (i.e., we studied what had already happened to patients that searched for ibogaine as an option to their problems with drug abuse), and published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology (Schenberg et al, 2014).

After gathering evidence showing that the use of ibogaine can help people who struggle with substance use disorders, we are currently finishing research with qualitative methods, aiming to produce a body of knowledge that will enable us to understand how this psychedelic alkaloid works.

For this study, we interviewed patients and gathered information about their drug problems, family issues, professional situations and spiritual aspects, as well as phenomenological descriptions of the ibogaine experience.

The next step, currently open for funding, is the realization of a placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial, the most rigorous scientific study on ibogaine for drug addiction to date.
